Infrared photometry of the inner regions of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 3109 ?

چکیده
We present VIJHK photometry for stars in a 0.8×2.0 kpc2 inner field of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 3109. The infrared photometry reaches 3 magnitudes fainter than previous work. Optical and infrared color–color and color–magnitude diagrams, and a bolometric luminosity function are constructed, confirming the presence of an intermediate-age stellar population. We also present a logL/L vs logTeff diagram of the galaxy and compare the results with the theoretical isochrones of Bertelli et al. (1994) for Z = 0.004 and Y = 0.24. The comparison suggests that most of the stars detected in the IR are 109 yr or younger. We compare the infrared color–magnitude diagrams of NGC 3109 with the composite color–magnitude diagrams of LMC clusters and of the outer disk of the Scd galaxy M33. They show similar stellar content in these late–type systems.

The Stellar Populations of NGC 3109: Another Dwarf Irregular Galaxy with a Population II Stellar Halo
We have obtained V and I-band photometry for about 17500 stars in the field of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 3109, located in the outskirts of the Local Group. The photometry allows us to study the stellar populations present inside and outside the disk of this galaxy. From the VI color-magnitude diagram we infer metallicities and ages for the stellar populations in the main body and in the ha...
متن کاملOn the Neutral Gas Content and Environment of Ngc 3109 and the Antlia Dwarf Galaxy
As part of a continuing survey of nearby galaxies, we have mapped the neutral gas content of the low surface brightness, Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 3109 — and its environment, including the Antlia dwarf galaxy — at unprecedented velocity resolution and brightness sensitivity. The Hi mass of NGC 3109 is measured to be (3.8± 0.5)× 10M⊙. A substantial warp in the disk of NGC 3109 is detected in th...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

We have obtained mosaic images of NGC 3109 in the V and I bands on 74 nights, spanning approximately one year. From these data, we have conducted an extensive search for Cepheid variables over the entire field of the galaxy, resulting in the discovery of 113 variables with periods ranging from 3.4 to 31.4 days. In this sample, 76 Cepheids, including many long-period variables, were not known be...
